Richworks ready to get a phenomenal makeover

Hello guys,

It has been a while since I caught up with you. You may have noticed the frequency of articles have declined for a while now. Nothing to worry as I am back on my feet and filled with ideas to share!

Also, this is quite a busy time for me now as I have to prepare for my examinations which are supposed to be held on February 2011. So, I will be briefly writing articles, perhaps once every week, but i assure they will be of high value. I usually am not a huge fan of writing articles which have already been dealt before. With the plethora of design blogs out there, chances are that the ideas for newer articles are running out but a thorough research into this matter will certainly prove me wrong.

Anyways, back to the main theme of this article. Well, as you may have noticed, I have been running this blog for over 6 months now and I am really grateful to the design community for helping me out throughout the journey so far in building this blog.  A BIG THANKS to all of you :) This has compelled me to transform the blog into something phenomenal.

“A journey of thousand miles begins with a single step.”

So, i felt the need to take this blog to a totally different level. After reading blogs like AIGA, Fast Company, Design Observer, Retinart and many other influential ones, I decided it is best if I start writing articles which directly influence the design community and help build a better designer out of every individual. Enough of List posts and roundups; animal photographs and funny pictures…. It is time we evolve into something which motivates us into solving real world design problems and not to create internet memes :)

As a result, I am working a new theme as we speak (the first step) and the design of the theme has been inspired by many simple, minimalistic yet profound design blogs out there. I am not a full bottle on WordPress development so I had to buy a theme and work on it. I hope you will forgive me for this minor glitch of not embracing the true profession of design (time is a heartless #%$&* so maybe in the future, I can learn and design a theme of my own)

I shall upload this theme in a day or two and start working on it side by side :) So, please forgive me if you find any bugs in the structure of the theme or the interface. I plan to relentlessly work on building a great blog and publish thought provoking articles. I need your support if we have to make this possible.

I received a few complaints about the slowness of this website due to a lot of (annoying?) elements which are a bit too distracting. I can understand this issue and therefore I am working on that as well. More emphasis on writing great content and less emphasis on making money is definitely my motto (at least from now on :) )

Enough said! It is time to get back to business. I thought it would be appropriate to let you guys know that I am still alive and kicking! I have so many ideas for articles lined for this blog (scribbled on my scratchpad). I am continually working on collecting relevant information and them and compiling to publish them at the right time.

In the mean time, feel free to provide me suggestions and share your thoughts about my future outlook for this blog. Your feedback is the driving factor for this blog’s success (in terms of value added) and popularity. So, do not hesitate to share any criticism (positive or negative) with me.

On a side note, I am highly active on Twitter and share some really cool links everyday. Go ahead and follow me if you still aren’t…

    Good to hear from you!
Let me know if you’re having any troubles with the coding part and I’ll be glad to lend you a helping hand!
I’m definitely looking forward to the new theme!

Nice idea. I really hate your previous theme. Too many distraction. This one is much better and easier. I hope the latest theme is not another distracting design.

Good luck with your design. If you have any trouble with coding, don’t call me. I’m too stupid for that. :)

Thanks a lot, Jeprie… You have been very supportive and giving me constant feedback on my blog.

yeah, even I had a bit of disliking towards how my last theme was progressing in terms of design and usability. Anyways, I hope to create a more user friendly appeal with this one. Will try to remove ads as many as possible and stick to emphasizing content.

In a few weeks, I am sure everything will up and ready.

  3. I really like the ‘redesign’ of your website! A lot better than the previous one, in my opinion.

Waiting eagerly for some great articles from you! And best of luck for your examinations! :)

  4. Richie,

I definitely like this theme much better than the previous one. To me, the last one was a bit too busy. Adding some margin/padding to the content and dropping a few of those empty ad spots would really give this one a boost.

I’m looking forward to your future articles. I see that you are moving away from list posts. It’s hard not to blame you on that move, seems like every design blog out there has a new one up daily. They are great for a traffic boost, but not enough people put the time in to make them very useful. Using each item in an example or maybe explaining why each item is useful makes a list post much more appealing in my opinion. I think they can be mixed in with other articles if done right.

Congrats on keeping up with college and still managing to run a blog. I know how much time college can eat up and hats off to you for juggling the two. I wish you all the success and can’t wait for you to transform the scribbles of your notepad into future articles on the site.

Thank you so much for your kind words, Shawn. They are very motivating. Yeah, i felt that the older theme looked a lot too heavy with so many clutters. This feels a bit lighter, although it needs a lot of refinement.

I will definitely look into those empty ad spots, in fact I am planning to remove advertisements in the distant future. They are very distracting and annoying(sometimes). I do not understand what you mean by “padding/adding margin” to the content. Is that a serious problem? How may I resolve it…..Man, clearly, I am such a noob!!

Yeah, list post may bring traffic but they absolutely add nothing to the value of the blog and the article. They are just a simple excuse to publish content quickly with applying least effort as possible. Writing articles which add value to the blog/content and educating readers about the right information is the best way to show that you respect design, creativity and blogging, even though you may publish once a week or so.

But as you said, if they are executed systematically and offer the best from the web, then they are certainly needed as they will help a lot of young designers and beginners in many other aspects too.

Thank you so much again, Shawn. You’ve been a great friend as always and are always straight to the point. I wish you the very best with Bluefaqs and keep in touch :)
