Test your Creativity – Remix Contest by Alternate Rail
I’m sure you all remember Alex, the mastermind behind the awesome Tutorial ‘Retro Futuristic Typography‘ which was featured in many design blogs, tutorial websites and has gained widespread popularity among artists.
Well, he is back with another awesome article, but this time it is a Remixing Contest. This contest is something different from what we have seen in other design blogs until now. Its very simple and will help you learn and participate in a constructive manner.
This is also a new way of getting yourselves noticed by other budding artists from around the world as your works will get featured in the magazine which is being prepared as a part of his university project which will be showcased in an exhibition for everyone to view.
Here is how it works:
Alex has created a cool Tiger Illustration in Adobe Illustrator and he wants us to ‘REMIX’ the original design, add stuff, shapes, lines, words and whatever you think can make it look even more awesome. Just use your creative minds to the best and remix this art piece into something you will be proud of.
He has provided the Illustrator file (ai) that has every individual aspect separated into different layers that are also named appropriately, to make your job easier and more fun.
Here is the AI file for you to download : DOWNLOAD ILLUSTRATOR FILE
UPDATE : For those you having a version incompatibility, here is the CS3 version of the file : DOWNLOAD
This is how the illustration looks like:
Well, you might ask, ‘What’s in it for me?‘. Well, as artists we always hope for the community to grow and learn better. We will definitely reward you, but in an unconventional manner and your work will be looked at by other budding artists from the opposite ends of the world :)
Here is the deal:
The most original and compelling remixes will get featured in a magazine/artbook which is being prepared for a university project (with due credit given to each artist) that will be displayed in an exhibition for everyone on campus to view. So in a nutshell, there’s no real “prize” for this contest, but surely exposure, and that warm fuzzy feeling you get from contributing to the artistic community.
Rules for the REMIX contest:
You will need to submit your artwork within 25th April, 2010, so effectively you will be getting around a couple of weeks to tweak the original design. We apologize for the restrictive time-frame but we need them by then in order to have everything ready for the assignment’s submission date. Feel free to try remix it after this date however if you feel so inclined.
So even if you think you aren’t “good enough” or can’t think of anything to do with it, give it a shot regardless, you may surprise yourself. Just apply your creativity and rattle your brains on this. The important thing is, you will learn something cool, by the end of the day.
Post any attempts in the comments section or hit me up with a note with a link to the work. Also, you can post them in Alex’s DA profile itself, whichever you think is convenient. Looking forward to seeing what you guys come up with.
Here is Alex’s Deviant Art Page for more details and if you want to ask him any questions about the whole thing : Alternate Rail – REMIX ME.
GOOD LUCK GUYS and remember, 25th April :)

Already had someone contact me with a similar issue actually. I posted a CS3 compatible version on the comments section of the original artwork on deviantart. May want to copy and paste it here Richie, or mention that it’s there. Sorry about that.
