50 most stunning examples of data visualization and infographics

“A picture is worth a thousand words”, if I had a penny for every time I heard that!! There is so much data in the world today that it has become impossible for us to analyze them with patience. Data as we perceive it, need not be boring, bland and cumbersome to remember. To make complex things seem simple, is Creativity and using pictures to represent data has been an age old method to analyze data in a fun way.

From navigating the web in an entirely new dimension to understanding how the human brain works; from peeking into how Google has evolved to analyzing the inner working of the geeky mind, Infographics has completely changed the way we view content and visualize data.

Today, information is ubiquitous; it surrounds the world as we know it. It surround us in the media, in published works both pedestrian and scientific, in road signs and manuals. What if there were ways in which we can transform this raw information into something more illustrative and visually stunning.

Information graphics or infographics are visual representations of information, data or knowledge. These graphics are used where complex information needs to be explained quickly and clearly, such as in signs, maps, journalism, technical writing, and education. They are also used extensively as tools by computer scientists, mathematicians, and statisticians to ease the process of developing and communicating conceptual information. They illustrate information that would be unwieldy in text form, and act as a visual shorthand for everyday concepts such as stop and go.

Although they were being used heavily only in children’s books, where pictures convey more information than the text themselves, they are also common in scientific literature, where they illustrate physical systems, especially ones that cannot be photographed such as diagrams of inner workings of a subsystems, astronomical diagrams, and images of microscopic or sub-microscopic systems.

Modern maps, especially route maps for transit systems, use infographic techniques to integrate a variety of information, such as the conceptual layout of the network, destination points, and local landmarks. Traffic signs and other public signs rely heavily on information graphics, such as stylized human figures, icons and emblems to represent concepts such as yield, caution, and the direction of traffic. Technical manuals make extensive use of diagrams and also common icons to highlight warnings, dangers, and standards certifications.

The terms Data visualization and Infographics are used interchangeably, the former means the study of visual representation of data and the latter is its representation per se.

In this article, I have showcased some of the most creative infographics and data visualization examples, along with some really effective tools to help you improve your skills in creating infographics. Enjoy the journey!

  25. denim geek says:

Human subway map is awesome! some really coll innovative ideas here. Nice Post.

  26. Very nice post. The best infographics take otherwise boring data and present them in a compelling way. This is harder than it sounds and requires a good bit of creativity. My favorite is the systems of the human body. Even for those of us outside of the UK, the London UnderGround is so recognizable and the analogy between the subway lines and the distinct systems in the body is just genesis.

  27. Brandy says:

There are some nice examples of data visualization here, but in a time of creative flowering in infographics, I was surprised to see the unattributed PETA graphic, which doesn’t stand out as at all remarkable (and certainly isn’t one of the 50 best out there) and is full of agribusiness propaganda you usually find only on vitriolic far right web sites.

I actually do have some criticisms of PETA and would welcome a real analytical treatment of it, but I think that graphic was created in bad faith.

Data visualization is a great tool for informing and facilitating creative thinking, but, unfortunately, it can also put a pretty face on thin or bad data.

    • Richie says:

      Hi Brandy,

Thanks for your valuable input. Yes, some might argue that the direction in which PETA is heading is quite unethical and they are doing it just for attention. Perhaps I wasn’t aware of this fact when I made this post which can be the only reason why I might have added it. I’ll see what I can do.

      Thanks again…

  28. Ohmz says:

I haven’t finished the articles but I needed to say this.
THIS IS AWESOME, BRILLIANT, GORGEOUS!! really, I fell in love with these infographc completely.

  29. Keith says:

I like the GE smartgrid. I also like the legos timeline. Less is more. There are a lot visuals that leave a bit of a headache.

  30. I was surprised to see the unattributed PETA graphic, which doesn’t stand out as at all remarkable (and certainly isn’t one of the 50 best out there) and is full of agribusiness propaganda you usually find only on vitriolic far right web sites.
