Some of the best inspiration that we can seek is definitely from the 70s and 80s. The amazing retro ideas that people crafted back then without the use of any computers is certainly a commendable feat. Most of us are so attached to the old times that we hate to let it go. What would you have done if you had100s of cassette tapes that just seems a bit outdated? Throw it, maybe! Well, Meet Erika Iris Simmons. Her artworks could definitely inject some inspiration into you.

Erika, better known as Iri5, is a self-taught artist who works with non-traditional media . Most of her materials have been discarded or donated at some point. She has a very unique style of contemplating retro art. She uses magnetic tapes from old cassettes to create some of the best known art I’ve ever seen. She redefines creativity in a bold style.

What she’s created with some old cassette tapes and reel tapes is simply remarkable. Using these old tapes, Erika has turned them into works of art in a series that she calls “Ghost in the Machine.”  The series portrays celebrities and musicians such as Marilyn Monroe, Bob Dylan, Robert DiNero, Jimi Hendrix, Ian Curtis, and Jim Morrison and more.

I try to express an idea, through the arrangement of very common things, with the hope that some message is conveyed without words. I love the nostalgia of the archaic and I hope that not everything which has outlived its use goes to waste.

I have shared some of her awesome works. Don’t forget to visit her Portfolio website : iri5 and her Flickr Profile : iri5
